FAQ
How Do I Use the ShroomBag Mushroom Grow Kit?
With a sharp clean knife, cut a 4 inch wide cut into the face-up side of the bag. Place it in a spot with fresh air and indirect light, then mist it twice daily and let the mushrooms do their thing. Most varieties begin fruiting in 7–14 days.
Do I Need to Mist the Grow Kit?
We recommend you mist the inside of the box (the ceiling) twice per day rather than spraying the mushrooms directly. However, avoid spraying so much that water pools on the mushrooms or substrate. Standing water can lead to contamination. Mushrooms love it humid, but they don't like swimming.
How Do I Use the Lid as a Humidity Dome?
The lid is designed to fold into a triangle “roof” over your ShroomBag. Just tuck the side flaps into the top opening (Check out our home page for a visual) to form a little canopy.
This helps keep a humid environment for your mushrooms to thrive in. We recommend lifting the lid all the way off when you mist to help circulate fresh oxygen.
Pro tips:
- Mist the inside of the lid regularly- this keeps humidity high where it matters most.
- The box is made to handle misting- it’s high-quality, non-toxic, and totally safe for growing mushrooms.
- Mushrooms will start forming right under the roof, where it’s nice and moist.
- The box allows for airflow through the front and sides of the lid, so your mushrooms can breathe while staying humid.
When the mushrooms start stretching up and nearly touch the lid, it’s time to give them more room.
Just open the top flap and rest the side flaps on top of the box. You’ll go from a cozy tent to a wide canopy, letting your mushrooms breathe and grow to full size without bumping their heads.
Where Is the Best Place to Keep The ShroomBag?
Anywhere relatively humid with indirect light and fresh oxygen flow like a kitchen counter. Avoid direct sunlight and strong drafts.
For outdoor growing (above 55 degrees Fahrenheit,) a shaded porch, under garden plants, or in the woods are all great places for growing mushrooms.
How Many Harvests Will I Get?
Most kits yield 2–3 flushes. After your first harvest, flip the bag and cut the opposite side. after your second harvest flip the bag and cut the bottom (flat) side. After 2-3 harvests, it's time to expand your substrate outdoors!
The next round of mushrooms will usually begin to grow within 14 days. Oysters usually show up sooner, Lion's Mane can take its time between harvests.
What Should I do Once the ShroomBag Stops Fruiting?
Don’t toss it, spent substrate is valuable. You can:
- Break it up in pasteurized straw or wood chips to grow more mushrooms!
- Use it as garden mulch- it will enrich your soil and may produce more mushrooms over time.
- Support soil health- the mycelium continues breaking down organic material and promoting microbial diversity.
- Donate it to a local ecological group or farmer
How Long Will the Kit Last Before I Need To Use it?
For best results, we recommend starting your kit as soon as it arrives.
The box is shelf-stable for up to 2 months, and as always fresh is best.
Store in a moderate temperature range (55-70 degrees Fahrenheit) and keep the box closed.
Sometimes if left in the box, the mycelium will find its way outside the bag and try to grow out of the box. If you see mycelium on the filter patch on the bag, simply spray it with hydrogen peroxide and wipe it off with a rag.
Are These Kits Beginner-Friendly?
Absolutely. No syringes, no sterile lab, no stress. They’re designed for home cooks, restaurant owners, curious minds, and anyone who enjoys fresh food.
What Do I Do if I See Infection?
If you notice a green or gray discoloration on your ShroomBag around where you cut the bag, it could be a sign of contamination.
Here’s what to do:
- Don’t panic, this is manageable.
- Spray the affected area lightly with white vinegar. This helps stop the spread and kill the infection.
- Avoid touching or disturbing the infected spot too much.
- Keep the bag in a well-ventilated area and continue misting as usual away from the infection site.
