What it does
Conditions forecasting — soil moisture, recent rainfall, temperature trends, and degree-day accumulation compiled into a simple "what's active" read for your region.
Species intelligence — fruiting windows, habitat notes, and lookalike warnings drawn from peer-reviewed mycology, not crowdsourced guesses.
Region-aware — enter a city or postal code and the forecast adapts to your microclimate.
Why privacy-first matters
Foraging spots are sacred. A patch of chanterelles your grandfather showed you. The morel hillside you've nursed for a decade. The chicken-of-the-woods log you check every August.
Most "outdoor" apps quietly harvest your GPS, build a profile of where you walk, and sell or leak it. We refuse to participate in that economy.

Understory is made by the team behind Maya Mushroom. Every species window, every habitat note, every lookalike warning has been pressure-tested against the field guides on our own shelves and the mycologists in our own community. We are always open to conversation, we are students of mycology, and we will always be updating this app with every encounter.

Understory is an educational tool. It is not a substitute for expert identification. Never eat a wild mushroom based on any single source — including ours. Always confirm with multiple printed field guides, an experienced mycologist, and your regional mycological society. Many edible species have deadly lookalikes.
